Rexam Welcomes Amendment To German Packaging Law

Rexam has welcome the recent vote by the German Bundesrat on resolution that clarifies the legislation on returnable packaging. Rexam said the amendment should result in a "simple deposit system on all one-way packaging for beer, carbonated soft drinks & water, in contrast to today's system that levies deposits depending on refill quotas." Since the introduction of the deposit, one-way packaging has all but disappeared from supermarket shelves, Rexam said, adding that the Bundesrat's decision "will remove the uncertainty that has effectively paralysed initiatives towards a national infrastructure to handle deposits & their repayment." Commenting on the news, Rexam's new CE, Lars Emilson said: "This is very positive news for one-way beverage packaging in Germany. It means that finally, the government can spell out rules of engagement for a deposit system."
