Reformulation Of Container Glasses For Environmental Benefit Through Lower Melting Temperatures

The chemical composition of container glass has evolved over many years to become almost generic, providing a cost effective material which fits its purpose well. Container glass compositions are essentially the cheapest acceptable formulations in terms of raw materials, but increasingly stringent environmental legislation may soon cause changes in the economic balance. Much work has been published regarding melting aids & new raw materials to increase melting efficiency. However, there is little published work on modifying the chemical composition to reduce its melting temperature, whilst at the same time maintaining its desirable characteristics. This paper discusses the development of a number of reformulated container compositions, emphasising the physical properties of the new glasses & estimated reductions in thermal NOx generation.
