In this article, the author explains how he was faced with the complete dissolution of pot bases in a small furnace, the details of which are given. In comparing this experience with that of others in the industry, the importance of the degree to which heat affects corrosion rates, both at and below the glass line, led to an idea for the control of glass line attack in tank furnaces which has advantages over external wall cooling.
