Refining Of Potassia-Magnesia-Baria-Silica Glasses

The production of barium containing mixed alkaline silicate glasses has been investigated. Various methods have been undertaken to remove seeds and blisters in the glass melt in order to achieve bubble free glass specimens required for mechanical testing. The most effective method to reduce bubbles in these glasses was found to be control of the redox number of the glass batch via carbon additions. To completely remove the bubbles from the glasses, remelting was also found to be necessary.
