The application of IPPC 96/61/EC Directive on prevention and environmental control, affecting all glass manufacturers, states that these companies must adopt all available measures aimed at reducing pollution (energy saving, natural source preservation, waste and water reduction). These measures should be based on BAT (Best Available Techniques) with industrial plants authorised on the basis of emission limit values according to BAT results. The glass industry is among those sectors for which the drawing of a BREF (BAT Reference Document) is required for furnaces having an output higher than 20 tons/day. This document should contain all kinds of information (production process, available technologies, etc.) relevant to the reduction of the environmental impact in each industrial sector.
