From Rees Mosaic To Opus Sectile: The Development Of Opaque Stained Glass

Opus sectile was manufactured by James Powell & Sons from waste glass that had been ground and hot compacted. The trial and error development of the material can be deduced from the firm's order and cash books between 1863 and 1870. The widespread use of opus sectile for church decoration is discussed briefly and the cost of such monuments is examined.
