Reducing Weight May Not Help Waste

Representative from the UK packaging & chemistry industries believe waste reduction targets that focus on weight savings may not be useful. This was told to a UK Lords Science & Technology Sub-Committee hearing on waste reduction, held on 22 January. Rick Hindley, Chief Executive Officer for the Aluminium Packaging Recycling Organisation, explained that aluminium cans have already been made lighter & further weight reductions could lead to food spoilage through damage in transit. The IOM3 provided a written submission to the hearing. It called for more information on materials & manufacturing processes to be provided to engineers & designers, so they are able to make more knowledgeable decisions when creating eco-products.
