A simplified computational model of refining gas transfer through the quiescent plate boundary between oxidized and reduced glass melts containing sulphur compounds as refining agents is presented. The results of calculations show no over saturation of glasses by gases, namely by SO2, close to the boundary and the appropriate laboratory experiments do not prove any bubble nucleation in the boundary region. If, on the contrary, the glasses are quickly mixed, a considerable amount of bubbles evolve in the melt. The latter experimental finding is confirmed by the high glass oversaturation by SO2, calculated from redox equilibria of mixed glasses.
