Recycling Special Glass (Cathode Ray Tubes)

When the container glass industry began using recycled cullet 20 years ago, it faced considerable difficulties. Since that time, the rate of recycling has been brought up to approximately 63% (in Germany 1993), with green glass having the highest rate at approximately 93%, while clear or brown glass account for only about 50%. The reasons for the limited rate of recycling in this case point to findings which can be directly applied to special glass. Schott has initiated a project to look for possiblities of utilisation ("new" products) and is also examining how to produce environmentally compatible materials by vitrifying contaminants while integrating recycled glass.
