The Recycling Of Crt Glass For The Production Of Glass Ceramics Materials

The management of electronic waste is a problem for all industrialised countries. 80% of these waste materials consist of TV sets and PC monitors, the main components of which are Cathode Ray Tubes (CRTs) that are mainly composed of glass (2/3 by weight). In the UE 7.5 million tons per year are produced and a yearly increment of 3-5% is estimated. On account of this and considering that CTR glasses contain pollutants, it is evident that the management of electronic waste is a problem whose solution cannot be ignored. In this paper laboratory tests performed to verify the suitability of end of life CRT glasses (panel & funnel) to be used as secondary raw materials for the production of glass-ceramic materials are described. The results indicate that this use is possible and may represent a valid alternative to landfilling.
