Reclassifying Crystalline Silica

Crystalline silica or "silica dust" may have to be reclassified as a known carcinogen, following research conducted by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC). The Agency has found that there is enough evidence in humans for the carcinogenicity of inhaled crystalline silica in the forms of quartz or cristobolite from occupational sources. However, the reclassification could have significant regulatory consequences. The reclassification will put pressure on government agencies to tighten health and safety regulations on silica. The IARC is likely to suggest lower permissable exposure limits for crystalline silica of 0.05mg/m3 or less. (whole item)
