Calumite's plant in Scunthorpe produces a raw material for the industry which is dispatched in bulk to most glass plants in the UK. The firm has expanded export sales & Calumite has been dispatched recently to Mexico, Chile, Turkey, Saudi, Oman & Pakistan. The material comes from the steelmaking blast furnace operated by Corus, as a co-product of steel making initially in the form of molten slag, cooled instantaneously by quenching in large volumes of cold water (known as granulation) resulting in a glassy material & having glass content (by XRD) of 99%. Corus controls the slag composition to ensure consistent steel quality & as such Calumite is able to achieve a high degree of chemical consistency. Calumite is used primarily as a raw material for float & container sectors but could be used in any type of glass where the chemistry of the product will allow.
