Rare-Earth-Doped Fibres For Telecommunications Applications

This paper reviews some of the properties that are key to the success of EDFAs (erbium-doped fibre amplifiers) and discusses the potential for other rare-earth-doped glass-fibre combinations that may find possible applications in future telecommunications networks.
