The Indian glass industry is rapidly developing due to the integration of India with the developed world. The country's growing construction industry is leading to growth in the float glass industry & domestic manufacturers are planning to substantially increase their focus on value-added products in order to improve their margins. Total flat glass manufactured in India is currently approximately 1.1M/tpa, of which 76% is supplied to the domestic market. The infrastructure boom, together with a robust automotive sector, has prompted businesses to expand capacity. 5 new float lines will be commissioned by 2010. The Indian flat glass industry is an oilgopoly of 3 dominant companies: Saint Gobain, Asahi Glass & Guardian. India is emerging as a lucrative market market for global automotive manufacturers & auto glass production is dominated by Asahi (70%) SG (25%).
