A new industrial method has been developed for characterization of the redox state of glass melts by oxygen activity measurements in melts of representative samples. The first application is redox measurement of recycled cullet and stabilization of redox state by corrective additions. The influence of different impurities on redox can be quantified. Measurement during melting of fresh batches or during remelting of samples gives important information on furnace behaviour and final product quality.
