In November, Quinn Glass attended the National Procurement Awards 2010 ceremony in the Burlington Dublin. The company were guests of C&C (Bulmers/Magners) who that evening won the award for "Green Procurement in the Private Sector" having beaten off the challenge from such companies as Vodafone Irl. Over the past 24 months Quinn have worked on a cost reduction programme with C&C. This involved numerous visits to Clonmel as well as hosting a number of C&C employees in Derrylin. Quinn looked at all aspects of the business between the 2 companies and came up with cost saving initiatives which have been implemented over the past few months. Two of the main initiatives involved the redesign and related lightweighting of the 330ml and the pint and work on the pack specifications to remove the cardboard capping tray and increase the number of bottles on a pallet. The work carried out of the bottle design and weight means that the 330ml is now 13% lighter and the pint bottle almost 30% lighter than they were 18 months ago. The work on the pack specifications was equally as successful with the cardboard layer at the top of the pallet removed by using the Loadhog pad. The additional stability afforded to the pack as a result of this change also allowed Quinn to add an extra layer of glass to the pack. The reduction in packaging waste, fallen bottles both at Quinn Glass and C&C and transport savings were significant and no doubt added to the success of the submission for the award.
