In recent years the Italian glass industry has welcomed the experimentation of substitute raw materials, spurred by the cost of imported raw materials, the need for recycling and the hints coming from the Italian and European laws for environmental protection. Some examples are reported concerning domestic and foreign sand (siliceous and feldspar sand) recently marketed in Italy, as well as domestic processed slag. The improved compositional contancy has considerably increased the use of these materials. Experimental results are also given on the recycing of stack dust. Domestic cullet quality is finally discussed as to various undesired materials (metals, magnetic and non-magnetic materials, ceramics, glass-ceramics, etc).
