Carribean Business reported 27th December, 2007 that Owens-Illinois of Puerto Rico plans to close its plant in Vega Alta in February 2008. The closure will directly affect some 185 jobs at the plant, which manufactures and recycles glass bottles. Carlos Bermudez, principal stockholder and general manager of the plant, said one of the two furnaces at the plant was shut down for repairs in June 2007. The cost of the repair of the furnace was estimated to be US$4-5M. Sources close to the company said Bacardi and Cerverceria India, both clients, are in talks with the company's headquarters in Ohio about a possible acquisition of the plant.
