In the past few years the demand of the food industry for high quality and value-adding packaging has determined the rapid evolution of glass containers. Their use in increasingly rapid filling lines, the European and Italian legislation evolving towards environment and man protection, as well as the need to produce glass containers competitive with other packaging materials, have set new targets for glass manufacturers: defect-free container production, computer-assisted design, and a positively comparable environmental balance. Hardware and software systems in use are reviewed as to implementation and user friendliness, versatility, costs and obtainable results.
