Preparation And Application Of Radio Therapeutical Glass Microspheres

Solid and porous glass microspheres (GMS) containing Y-89 or P-31 nuclides for intervention radio therapy to malignancy have been made by the flame spray method and phase separation technique via the wet chemistry method. They can emit short effective range of B-rays with high energy after activation in a nuclear reactor when they are converted to Y-90 or P-32 nuclides. These GMS with high specific radioactivity, and proper half-life, can be easily entrapped into the target organ killing the cancerous cells and have significant therapeutic effect in the clinic tests on liver cancer, gastric cancer, pancreatic huge tumour and uterus malignancy. About 50% of ill patients who were treated with these GMS have had their life expectancy extended by more than 36 months.
