Preheating Cullet While Using The Cullet Bed As A Filter For Waste Gases In The Edmeston Heat Transfer/Emission Control System

The Irish Glass Bottle Co., along with the British Glass Manufacturers Confederation and Edmeston GmbH, was awarded a Thermie grant by the EC in 1994 to develop a new cullet preheating process. The waste gases pass directly through a bed of cullet before discharge to atmosphere thereby adding to the heat recycled to the furnace. In addition, the gases pass through an ioniser, before the cullet bed, causing the dust particles to be electrically charged. By immersing electrodes in the cullet bed the glass is polarised and the charged dust particles are captured on the surface of the cullet.
