The relentless march of premixes in the UK on-trade is reflected in recent figures from Nielsen, which show that of the top five premium packaged drinks (incorporating bottled lagers, ciders and PPS') in the sector in value terms, three are spirit-based mixes. The overall sector leader, by a comfortable margin, remains a beer, namely Budweiser. Second place is Bacardi Breezer and third Smirnoff Ice with Beck's in fourth place. Much to be expected - but a real surprise in fifth place, with WKD, the vodka-based range of pre-mixes from Beverage Brands, leapfrogging the long-established Holsten Pils.
