Caithness Glass has been taken over by the UK pottery firm Royal Worcester ad Spode. Caithness employs 230 staff and exports paperweights to more than 45 countries. It also boasts a paperweight collectors' society with around 8000 members worldwide. The main markets are the USA, Canada, Australia and Taiwan. It was the reputation of the company's paperweights and art glass that attracted the attention of the famous Staffordshire pottery firm, Royal Doulton in 1996. It owned Caithness for five years until a change in market demand forced it to put the company on the market. There are no redundancies expected and the future for the firm looks promising.
