A Possible New Interpretation Of The Structure Of Borate Glasses

The original model of the sodium borate glass structure, proposed by the authors some years ago, is briefly summarised and some of its advantages underlined. Evidence is presented for the existence of two roles for sodium oxide with opposing effects upon the structure and properties. The variation of basicity with the composition of sodium borate glasses was examined. Basicity data from different sources, including those of the present authors, are presented.
