For some applications there are no substitutes for precious metals. Accurate temperature control in the forehearth depends heavily on direct measurements of glass temperature from thermocouples immersed in the body of the glass and these thermocouples not only depend on platinum for protection but exploit the electrical characteristics of the metal to record the temperature.
