South Africa is the source of over three quarters of world platinum production, and its share is set to grow, with several new mines either planned or already under construction. This special feature takes a closer look at where South Africa's platinum comes from: the types of ore, the location of the mines, and the technology used to extract pure metals from rock containing minute concentrations of pgm. At a time of important new developments in the South African platinum industry, this paper also looks at the changes - and challenges - that the industry faces as it enters the new millennium.
