For more than 100 years, porcelain enamels have been the most durable coating on metal for many domestic and industrial applications. The unique properties of glasses are an integral part of porcelain enamels when applied to metal substrates. Additionally, the effect of compression of the glass-metal composite after firing adds to the physical and thermal properties. Design of applications and other products today need to take advantage of the properties that can be developed but not to exceed the performance characteristics that tend to detract from the application of porcelain enamels.
