A report aiming to bring a "better balance" to the debate about packaging in the UK has been published by representatives of the packaging industry. Entitled `Packaging in Perspective' the study aims to counter the often negative public perception of packaging & highlights the work already being done to reduce its environmental impact. In particular, it claims that packaging accounts for less than 3% of all solid waste in the UK & that 60% of it is recycled each year. And, it says that £1.5BN has been spent by businesses in the last 10y to double the amount of packaging recovered & recycled. The report was prepared by the Advisory Committee on Packaging (ACP),the industry body which advises the government on packaging policy, & has received support from research organisation INCPEN, the Packaging Federation & recycling & compliance company Valpak. It reflects the work of a Communications Task Force set up by the ACP, which included representatives from BERR, Defra and WRAP.
