Oxidation States Of Metal Ions In Glass Melts

Previous studies of redox equilibria in silicate glass melts, for the ion couples: Fe2+/Fe3+, Cr3+/Cr6+, Ce3+/Ce4+, Sn2+/Sn4+ and As3+/As5+, provide values of the redox ratio, R (e.g. R = [Fe2+]/[Fe3+]), for different glass compositions. The equilibria are countered by oxide (-II) atoms (in the molten glass) and atmospheric oxygen. The results are in accordance with known (qualitative) behaviour and should be useful for future studies, since they indicate suitable glass compositions for detecting appropriate concentrations of the two oxidation states for these ion couples.
