The final compliance date under the EPA 1990, for the control of air pollutants, is less than one furnace campaign away. For existing furnaces, the EPA 90 limits for the three primary pollutants from glass manufacture - particulates, SOx and NOx is 1 October 2001. Technical and financial plans for pollution abatement need to be in place well before the deadline. What are the options available to glass makers? Primary methods such as All Oxy-Fuel, LoNOx or secondary control through end-of-pipe measures? Either way, pollution control is not likely to come cheap.
