Openness And Homogeneity Of Glasses

A new approach to the openness and homogeneity of glasses has been found by revising Shelyubskii's method. The approach consists of using: almost cord free glass specimens; an optical system to separate the scattered light from the regular transmission of the laser beam passing through the Christiansen cell, and; the maximum transmission of the cell containing as crushed glass particles for Tmax1 and heat treated glass particles for Tmax2. The homogeneity index of borosilicate glasses decreased with the growth of phase separation. The openness index of typical glasses revealed a good similarity with the free space (%) based on the molar refractivity and mean molar volume of the glasses.
