O-I Opens Recycling Operation In France

OI is to host a household glass waste recycling facility at its glass plant near Beziers in France. The new facility will be set up and operated by IPAQ, a glass recycling specialist which operates three other glass recycling plants in France, and should be operating by the end of 2007. According to OI, this development will be the first recycling plant in France to be built on a manufacturing site. It represents an investment worth 6M Euros, including subsidies from the EU and from local authorities. Between 120-150/tpa will be recycled through the site from Beziers, Herault, Languedoc-Rousillon, Provence and Alpes-Cote d'Azur. Waste glass will travel by conveyor straight into batch storage silos at the glass site. Lasers, digital cameras and ultraviolet systems will be used to sort cullet and to eliminate contaminants.
