An overview of the US glass packaging industry is given. The glass packaging industry made a commitment in 2007 to build awareness of consumer preferences, as well as the need to recycle glass containers. Both commitments seemed to have paid off for glass. New science shed light on consumer preferences in packaging, encouraging consumers to look at not only what is inside a package, but also the composition of the package itself. This led many consumers to turn to glass, for both organic and non-organic products, because of its inert characteristics & ability to maintain the purity and taste of products. Glass produces in N America had an impressive 2007. O-I more than tripled its first quarter profit from 2006. US glass container production was at capacity for the majority of 2007; however, 2 new factories are expected to open early 2008.
