Transient as well as residual stresses were measured in laboratory experiments on annealing by nonlinear cooling schedules. The data on transient stresses, in particular, were incompatible with a classical view of annealing but they could be explained by a more recent model of annealing, in which account is taken of structural as well as stress relaxation. The potentially utility of nonlinear annealing schedules is also discussed briefly.
