India's glass processors are not doing as well as they ought to, given the strong growth of the economy, and particularly, the construction and automobile industries - the main consumers of processed float glass. Glass processors complain that rapid expansion of production capacity during the boom years of the construction and automotive industries has resulted in some over-capacity now that growth has slowed. Indeed, many report losses in recent years and plant utilisation levels largely remain low. This article looks at the growth of glass processors in India and wonders where the expansions will stop.
