Peter Booth, T&G National Organiser for Manufacturing, has written to the Secretary of State for Trade & Industry, urging the UK government to support EU proposals to clamp down on the practice of "dumping" on imports of PET. He warned that unless action is taken to control dumping by China, Pakistan and Australia, UK PET manufactures could be forced to make plant closures resulting in job losses of between 200-450. "Dumping" is the practice whereby the price of an exported product is less than the cost of producing the product, and is sometimes used by countries seeking to establish a monopoly on a market. The EC is currently holding anti-dumping investigations. Mr Booth said: "UK PET makers have suffered seriously from the impact of dumping. They are being forced to sell at prices below market value, and are experiencing unsustainable financial losses".
