Possibilities of meeting particular novel property requirements by modifying glass composition are now virtually exhausted and the emphasis of recent research and development has been placed on changing the macro/microsructure, potential energy or surface state. Examples discussed include foam glass, fibre optics, ion-exchange strengthening and surface irradiation.
