The Heat Soak Test protocol of EN 14179-1:2005 has now been adopted by the Building Code of Australia as well as in the latest amendment of Australian Standard, AS1288. Therefore the requirements of EN 14179-1:2005 are now of greater interest in Australia but unfortunately it has been found that EN 14179-1:2005 can be misinterpreted. Also, it is possible for some nickel sulphide inclusions to have a level of residual risk of spontaneous breakage much greater than 1 in 400 tonnes after the Heat Soak Test protocol of EN 14179-1:2005 is used. This paper discusses how EN 14179-1:2005 can be misinterpreted. The proposed clarifications are also presented, together with a new Improved Heat Soak Test Protocol which will minimise the number of toughened glass panels requiring to be subjected to a secondary Heat Soak Test.
