Due to more and more drastic environmental rules in the glass industry, glassmakers tend to reduce nitrogen or sulfur oxide emissions by using some techniques that may induce a more or less reducing atmosphere in the furnaces, especially at the top of regenerative chambers. Experience allowed a better understanding where and what types of species may condense within the checkers as the waste gases cool down, depending on the atmosphere chemistry. Considering that corrosion could be limited, some specific laboratory tests were developed, describing this application, and also a new product highly resistant for this one. This new fused cast product, ER 55XX RX, is exclusively made of spinel MgAl2Or. It is not only resistant against NaOH (1), but also against NaOH (g) or Na2SO4 (1), also working in oxidising atmosphere.
