A New Era In Glass Cutting

Glass manufacturers in Germany are joining forces to develop new processes for the laser cutting of borosilicate glass. While laser processing is widely used in the metal industry, laser-based online cutting of glass has, until recently, only been proven on extremely thin glasses such as LCD glass. Thermal cutting of borosilicate glass and similar material with a thickness measured in mm was not previously possible outside the laboratory, to due the very low coefficient of expansion. Grenzebach has partnered with a number of glass manufacturers to develop new laser cutting procedures, in which many types of glass and thicknesses are cut at significantly higher speeds than can be achieved using conventional processes.
