Although a high proportion of beer worldwide is still distributed in refillable glass bottles, non-refillable PET bottles are now the most popular packaging for all beverages. Developments in beer production and packaging are briefly overviewed. Factors to be considered are discussed including increasing shelf life and reducing oxidative damage and beer staling. Technical challenges to be faced for packaging beer in plastic bottles are examined, such as capping and recycling.
