A novel charge control method using a metal mesh screen was applied to X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic measurements for various insulating oxide glasses; binary alkali silicate, borate, germanate, phosphate, tellurite and bismuthate glasses. Increasing the alkali content, core-level electrons in the cations as well as the oxide ions commonly showed lower binding energy shift except for the bismuthate system.
