Multi-Layer Pet: Strong Showing In Shelf-Life Test

PET (polyethylene terephthalate) packaging is popular, but there are concerns over its efficacy in protecting the taste, colour and sparkle of beverages over an extended period. This brief article outlines a study that aimed to test whether PET bottles can provide the shelf-life required by manufacturers and retailers (at least six months) and still deliver an acceptable quality of product and taste to the consumer. Quality of the drink, colour, ascorbic acid loss, carbonation level and taste were evaluated over a six-month period. Glass bottles offered the best performance but multi-layer PET bottles competed very effectively.
