Moving Glass Walls

For what is believed to be the first time in 20 years, a glazing specialist has fabricated and installed moveable glass walls able to provide a 3kN/m line load resistance. It was specified in response to the requirements for a new shopping mall. DR Services of Harlow was called in when other manufacturers were unable to match the specification. What is said to be particularly "unusual" about the project is that the five and six panel sliding stacking glass walls are frameless. The company achieved this by using 21.5mm thick toughened laminated glass and working with its European partner, Teufe, to produce special fittings able to accommodate the weight. The individual 3m tall panes of glass, formed from two 10mm layers of toughened glass with a 1.5mm PVB interlayer, weigh 168kg. The weight of the multiple leavers is carried by an overhead track with dust protected bolt holes for the bottoms of the units to be secured into and locked.
