The use of coated glass products for solar gain control and increased thermal resistance has enabled the development of glazing and window products suited to application and climate. Such glazing systems may reduce building energy consumption, improve visual and thermal comfort and lessen adverse environmental impacts. This paper provides a brief overview of some important glazing materials, in particular silver-based solar control coatings and dynamic electrochromic devices, and examines relevant work undertaken within selected projects of the EU JOULE and Standards, Measurement & Testing Programmes, relevant to the area of glazing development and characterization.
