Most new glass furnaces are modelled before the final design is decided, helping to optimise the furnace with regards to glass quality, energy efficiency and furnace lifetime. Furnace lifetime can be extended with better insight regarding temperature distribution and glass speeds that corrode the refractory. Today, one of the questions being asked by many glass producers is what the optimal glass bath depth is. In this article, the authors demonstrate how mathematical modelling can help to find the optimal furnace depth for a certain furnace design.
