A Model Of The Effect Of Abrasion On The Strength Of Glass

A model has been developed to explain the experimental data of Bourne et al (Glass Tech 25 1984 145-7) which shows that the strength of freshly blown glass surfaces after abrasion is inversely proportional to the square root of the hardness of the contact metal. The experimental results can be explained if damage arises from indentation wear tracks made on the glass surface by contaminating, microscopic hard particles embedded in the surface of the metals.
