Minsand Miners Count Cost Of Tsunami

The devastating and tragic impact of the Indonesian tsunami continues to unfold. Amongst the news emanating from the region have been reports from minerals sands companies. Clearly owing to the nature of their business, ie beach sand mining, many of them were literally in the front line of the tsunami impact. With the eastern coast of Sri Lanka bearing the full brunt of the tidal wave, news from this region has been particularly shocking. In October IM reported that Lanka Mineral Sands was due to resume operations from its Pulmoddai beach sands operation, some 52km north of Trincomalee on Sri Lanka's north-east coast. However, news reports indicate that Pulmoddai was among the most severely hit villages in the district. This article also reports of other mineral firms in the area.
