Garnet is valued primarily for its use in a variety of industrial applications but is also mined as a gemstone. The characteristics of garnet (angular fractures, high hardness, little or no free silica, and high resistance to physical and chemical attack) vary with composition with almandine being the hardenst, densest and toughest form available and therefore most suited bo abrasive applications.
