Methods For The Analysis Of Ream Knots In Glass

Methods are described whereby the complete analysis of ream knots occurring in silica-soda-lime-magnesia glasses can be accomplished by the use of rapid methods. The sample usually consists of about 20mg of powdered glass obtained by drilling with a tungsten carbide drill. Silica is determined spectrophotometrically, a spectrographic method being employed for the determination of Fe2O3. Al2O3, TiO2, ZrO2, CaO, and MgO. A flame photometer is used for the determination of Na2O and K2O. Additional information on other elements present in minor or trace amounts can be obtained from the spectrographic analysis.
